~Permanent Reference Electrodes (PRE) are used to monitor and investigate the polarization potentials of cathodically protected structures.
Amongst all the different types, saturated Copper/Copper Sulfate reference electrodes are the most used in soils.

Sintered Ceramic Reference Electrodes:
Ceramic reference electrodes make use of a porous ceramic tube with large exchange surface to allow electric contact with the soil but prevent any leakage of the internal copper sulfate solution.
In addition, a chloride selective membrane effectively blocks the ingress of all the chloride ions that may pollute the copper sulfate solution and cause premature failure.
These construction characteristics make sintered ceramic reference electrodes the best choice for testing Cathodic Protection of many structures in contact with soil such as underground pipelines and valves, buried or mounded tanks, bottom plates of aboveground storage tanks and many others.

Testing:
To ensure high and constant quality level, each reference electrode is tested with respect to a standard Calomel electrode to ensure that the reading remains in a pre-determined range.
